Other Information

I think kribensis are a really underrated fish and should be kept more often. They are easy to keep and breed, and will show some amazing colors once settled in.

Breeding

Spawning Method

Egg-layer (Parental Care)

The female will attract the male to a cave (coconut shells are often used for this in aquariums) where she will lay the eggs and the male will fertilize them. The eggs take about a week to hatch, and another few days after that to become free-swimming.

Spawn Size

70 fry

Breeding Season or Trigger

A healthy environment and plenty of food available. Live food probably works better than prepared foods, but isn't required.

Fry Care

Both parents should guard the fry well, including chasing away other fish and just leading the fry around the tank. Finely crushed flakes work great for raising them, although they should also eat baby brine shrimp or other small live foods.

Be careful about putting your hands in the tank when they have fry. I have had a male bite me because he was protecting his fry. It didn't hurt me at all, but it did startle me because I wasn't expecting it. So try to keep your hands away from them when they are breeding, just to minimize their stress.
