Other Information

Can often be found along the shore, facing away from the shore, awaiting a time in which they can ambush smaller fish swimming along the shore, or jump at insects passing overhead. Has been observed "death feigning", where they change their colors to appear dead to attract scavenger fish, before striking at said fish. Spawns in the rainy season in the wild, but is not particular about spawning conditions in captivity. Sexually matures at about 7 cm. Males possess intricate patterns on their operculums, while females will have more defined/solid striped patterns on theirs.
